Our Logo
Take eight lines and turn them into a
trademark that conveys a company's heritage, symbolizes its products, describes
its culture and can be reproduced in a variety of media.
That's what the New York design firm
Chermayeff & Geismar accomplished for Scripps in 1985.
The lighthouse that had represented
Scripps since the 1920s was replaced with a stylized version that can be
reproduced in blue, gray or black.
The current logo's predecessor was used by
Carl Magee, an Albuquerque publisher, to illustrate his "Turning on the
Light" column. When Scripps acquired Magee's newspaper, company president
Roy Howard adopted the logo as the corporate symbol. He also appropriated the
motto Magee used, "Give light and the people will find their own way."
