Board of Directors

William R. Burleigh, 69, was elected chairman of the board in May 1999. He retired as chief executive officer in September 2000. He had been president and CEO since May 1996. He was president and chief operating officer during the two prior years. He was elected executive vice president and joined the board of directors in 1990. Before joining the corporate staff in 1984, he was editor and president of The Cincinnati Post, and earlier, editor and president of the company's Evansville, Ind., newspaper. He was named senior vice president of newspapers in 1985.

Paul K. Scripps, 59, retired vice president for the newspaper division, has been a director since 1986.

Edward W. Scripps, Jr., 45, has been a member of the board since May 1998. A great-grandson of E. W. Scripps, he is a trustee of the Edward W. Scripps Trust. He formerly was a vice president of the Scripps Howard Foundation and was news director for Scripps-owned KJRH-TV in Tulsa, Okla.

John Burlingame, 71, retired partner of Baker & Hostetler, has been a director since 1988.

David Galloway, 61, is retired president and chief executive officer of the Toronto-based Torstar Corporation. He was elected to the board in November 2002.

Kenneth W. Lowe, 54, is president and chief executive officer of of The E.W. Scripps Company. He previously was chairman and CEO of Scripps Networks and founded Home & Garden Television in 1994. He was elected to the board in January 2000.

Jarl Mohn , 53, chairman of Mohn Family Trust became a director in May 2002.

Nicholas B. Paumgarten, 59, managing director of J.P. Morgan & Co. Inc., has been a director since 1988.

Nackey E. Scagliotti, 59, is publisher of Neighborhood Publications Inc., and also chairman of the board of Manchester, N.H.-based Union Leader Corp. A great-granddaughter of E. W. Scripps, she was elected to the board in May 1999.

Jeff Sagansky, 51, former vice chairman of Paxson Communications became a director in August 2003.

Ronald W. Tysoe, 51, vice chairman/finance and real estate, Federated Department Stores Inc., has been a director since 1996.

Julie A. Wrigley, 56, chairman and chief executive officer of Wrigley Investments LLC, became a director in May 1997.
