Deadline for college students to enter the Roy W. Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition is postmark Feb. 28, 2009. Winners of the competition will travel on a 13-day guided study tour to Japan and South Korea, an area of special interest to Roy W. Howard. The competition honors the memory of Mr. Howard, a journalist who led Scripps Howard Newspapers from 1922-1953 and United Press International from 1912-1920. Deadline for print, broadcast, Web and multimedia journalists to apply for the weeklong Scripps Howard Institute on the Environment is March 31, 2009. The program is designed to give journalists who cover the environment continuing education in the classroom and through field trips. Florida Atlantic University's Jupiter campus hosts the program that is headed by environment reporter-turned professor Neil Santaniello.

The Scripps Howard Foundation's Semester in Washington program is an internship program for college journalism students who write for the Scripps Howard Foundation Wire. In addition to a strong focus on reporting and writing national news and features, the program includes visits to the Capitol, the Supreme Court, the Library of Congress, the Student Press Law Center and other journalism and government institutions.
