Scripps Howard Institute on the Environment
Florida Atlantic University

Print, broadcast, Web and multimedia journalists were immersed in the “environment” during the weeklong Scripps Howard Foundation Institute on the Environment held in 2008 at Florida Atlantic University’s Jupiter campus. Headed by environment reporter-turned professor Neil Santaniello, the institute took journalists on a trek through Everglades National Park; canoeing the wild and scenic Loxahatchee River; examining the impacts of drought on the bed of Lake Okeechobee and searching for nesting loggerhead sea turtles on a moonlit beach; and more.

In class, journalists spent time with Florida and national environmental experts and heard veteran journalists talk about new media and environmental reporting, science-writing and emerging issues on the environment beat.

The program is designed to give journalsits who cover the environment continuing education in the classroom and through field trips. Visit www.ces.fau.edu/scripps for photos and stories of the 2008 institute.
