Featured Grants

Religion, Journalism and the Spiritual Life, Columbia University
Religion touches lives. The Scripps Howard Program in Religion, Journalism and the Spiritual Life at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism helps journalists write about religion for a diverse readership. Professor Ari Goldman, former religion reporter for The New York Times, teaches the “Covering Religion” class. This year's course looked at different religions today through a case study of how religion is evolving in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, with each student researching a specific faith or denomination and reporting to the class on what he or she has learned.

Follow the class on their journey, "the faiths o' the Irish", and read daily stories and photos.

Scripps Howard Institute on the Environment, Florida Atlantic University
In 2008, 21 experienced journalists were immersed in the “environment” during a weeklong Scripps Howard Foundation Institute on the Environment held at Florida Atlantic University’s Jupiter campus. The institute is headed by environment reporter-turned professor Neil Santaniello. Journalists took a hike through Everglades National Park; saw the effect of a severe drought on Lake Okeechobee, took a canoe ride on the wild and scenic Loxahatchee River, searched for nesting loggerhead sea turtles on a moonlit beach, and more. In class, they spent time with both Florida and national environmental experts, and heard veteran journalists talk about new media and environmental reporting, science-writing and emerging issues on the environment beat.

For information about applying for the June 1-6, 2009 program, contact Neil Santaniello, FAU journalism instructor at 561-799-8047, nsantane@fau.edu or www.ces.fau.edu/scripps. Deadline to apply is March 31, 2009.
