Semester in Washington
The Scripps Howard Foundation's Semester in Washington program brings talented college journalists to Washington, D.C., for a fast-paced, practicial internship in the nation's capital. Students work in the Scripps Howard News Bureau and produce stories for newspapers across the country. Visit www.shfwire.com to read and download the latest stories and photos.
In addition to a strong focus on writing, the program includes visits to the Capitol, the Supreme Court, the Library of Congress, the Student Press Law Center and other sites and seminar discussions about how to do a better job covering the news.
The program conducts three sessions a year. Six students each session, including one international student, receive free housing and a stipend.
Jody Beck, director of the program since 2003, holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a master's degree from the University of Maryland, both in journalism. Before joining the Foundation, she was an adjunct faculty member at several Washington-area universities and was a lecturer at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the Unviersity of Maryland, where she taught print and broadcast reporting. In her journalism career, she worked as an assignment editor for WRC-TV in Washington for 16 years, and was the Arlington-Alexandria bureau chief, a copy editor and reporter for The Washington Star.
